Last’s Anatomy – revered as the anatomical bible of surgical training, but who is the man behind the book? Prof. Last, an Australian and graduate of the Adelaide school of medicine, who went on in his career to become the eminent anatomist for the Royal College of Surgeons – working in London as a surgeon, anatomical curator and professor of applied anatomy. His textbook ‘Anatomy Regional and Applied’ was first published in 1954 in which he used his own illustrations to complement the text. Lasts has continued as the fundamental textbook for surgeons and surgical trainees due to its detail and focused nature on applicable and relevant anatomy for the surgeon. It may not be considered the most readable text however it provides the depth of knowledge and surgical perspective required to become an exceptional surgeon.
